Scaling & Root Planing

This non-surgical procedure is the first step in treating periodontal disease. The patient is numbed for this thorough removal of deposits from the tooth and root surfaces. The root surfaces are smoothed so that the gum tissue can heal and reattach to the tooth.

Dr. Harrell can help you halt the progression of periodontitis with a scaling and root planing procedure at our office in Alpharetta, Ga. If you experience persistent periodontal disease with deep gum pockets, you might be a candidate for this treatment.

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning below the gumline used to treat gum disease. There are two parts to this procedure. Scaling is the removal of all the plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) above and below the gumline, making sure to clean all the way down to the bottom of the pocket. The process of root planing will then begin, smoothing out teeth roots to help gums reattach to teeth. Scaling and root planing can take more than one visit to complete and may require a local anesthetic.
