Welcome to alpharettaperio.com
Alpharetta Periodontics performs dental extractions for many reasons including tooth decay, erupted wisdom teeth, for orthodontic treatment and more. The difficulty of each extraction varies; we will do everything we can to save your teeth before deciding to perform an extraction.
Extractions are a relatively common procedure for Dr. Harrell, and he can perform simple as well as surgical extractions. Unfortunately, some teeth cannot be saved. This can be due to severe bone loss, trauma or a fracture. When a tooth must be removed, a bone graft material is generally placed at the time of the extraction to begin the regeneration of bone so that the site will be preserved for a future or immediate dental implant.
There are two primary types of extractions that we perform:
Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible within in the mouth. These teeth are usually removed due to decay and the procedure is usually performed with a local anesthetic. Typically, the doctor will use forceps to loosen the tooth by moving back and forth. The loosened tooth will then easily come out.
Surgical extractions are performed on teeth that have not come in yet, wisdom teeth or teeth that are broken off at the gum line. In order to remove the tooth, Dr. Harrell will reflect the gum tissue, which allows access to the problematic area. This process visually reveals the tooth that needs to be removed. Such surgical extractions are typically done using a local anesthesia.
